Farms and farming, produce the foods that we buy in our grocery stores. This 15 Minute Circle Time focuses on the important role that farmers hold in this process.

Attention Getter: Farm Sounds

Place the following farm animal pictures on the floor in front of the class: cat, dog, cow, chicken, sheep, horse, pig, donkey, rooster, duck, goat, chicks. Tell them that they get to listen to animal sounds and determine which farm animal makes that sound. When they hear it, they can all tell you what animal it is.

This is a link to farm animal sounds. Just listen to the first 12 animals. The remaining animals sounds are NOT farm animals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8Q-jlHBcXM

Here are the pictures we used:

Activity 1: What Do Farmers Do?

Go around the circle and ask each child, "What do farmers do?" Write their answers on the board as you discuss various concepts that the children describe.

Book: Food From Farms

There are many great books about farms and farm animals. Food From Farms is a simple information book that shows real foods from plants and animals that farmers produce. It also describes how foods are harvested and shipped to the local grocery stores for people to buy.

Activity 2: Food From Farms

Have a shopping cart filled with a variety of foods from the store.

Ask the class, "Where does the food you buy in the store come from?" Emphasize that it comes from plants and animals on farms. Place a word card that says PLANTS and one that says ANIMALS in front of the group.

Then, let each child come up and choose a food out of the cart and decide whether it came from a PLANT or an ANIMAL on a farm.
